About Downers Grove
Downers Grove was founded in 1832 by New York settler Pierce Downer, who established a small farming community on what was then the Illinois prairie. Early residents were largely attracted by fertile land, nearby groves of oak trees, and access to regional trading routes.
Mid-1800s Growth & the Railroad
The biggest catalyst for growth came in 1864, when the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad extended tracks through the area. This connected the village to Chicago and boosted population, commerce, and commuting—something that still shapes the community today.
Incorporation & Early 20th Century
Downers Grove was officially incorporated in 1873. By the early 1900s, it developed into a thriving suburb with schools, churches, and small businesses forming the heart of its downtown. Residential expansion continued as the region urbanized.
Post-War Suburban Boom
After World War II, like many Chicago suburbs, Downers Grove experienced significant suburban growth. New subdivisions, shopping areas, parks, and civic buildings transformed the village into a modern suburb with a strong community identity.
Downers Grove Today
Downers Grove is known for its walkable downtown, historic homes, tree-lined neighborhoods, and a strong commuter link to Chicago. It maintains a blend of historic charm and suburban convenience, rooted in its nearly 200-year history.
